President & CEOAdditive Manufacturing’s disruption of the space industry is well underway, however, that reality does not end at powder bed technology. We now have access to a robust pallet of technologies including Electron Beam A.M. and Direct Energy Deposition. Space Applications suited to these technologies specifically are already in the public domain. Large structural components and pressure vessels are obvious examples. This will only expand as A.M. continues its evolution into the forefront of the industry. Part Counts will fall, and geometries will grow more complex. Air frame structural solutions have begun to migrate toward this application into the Space arena. Struts, bulkheads and payload mounting solutions are under development by leading Space innovators. The Aircraft effort will lead for now, but Space is rapidly catching up. Large format platforms are rapidly gaining applications in Space for the 3 primary technologies. Process control advances such as build temperature management, melt control and material management have yielded gains thought impossible just 6 months ago. Long standing perceived limitations in RF applications are evaporating with virtually instant prototype delivery and realization of required performance. How to manage CAD modeling in offsetting known A.M. limitations is coming into focus. Cycle time from concept to market is now a fraction of what the Space industry had accepted for decades. From the materials side, Modified Aluminums, Invar and Carbon Loaded Polymers will have a place in specialized R.F. applications. Space is experiencing what will likely be its largest reset since Integrated Circuits. Lead Technical SpecialistThe Space global scenario sees new actors entering in the market in addition to the traditional Space Agencies. In the private sector new Economy enterprises and venture capitalists are increasing their presence in new contexts of Space Exploration.
The space sector SME's, in order to face new opportunities emerging from this evolving situation, have to invest in innovation and internationalization.
At institutional level in Europe, in addition to National and European Governments and Space Agencies, also some Regions have decided to support their SME's in these new Space market challenges: it is the case of Piedmont Region in Italy.
The Aerospace sector in Piedmont is a strategic axis of the regional policy, it accounts about 15000 employees and 4 BEuro of turnover. The presence of 5 big players, more than 300 SME's, 3 Universities and several Research centers confirms the Piedmont as one of the most important Aerospace districts in Europe.
To support the local SME's in the Internationalization growth, the Piedmont Region is acting through its Agency called Piemonte Agency that is involved in these activities since more than 20 years by means of dedicated Integrated Project teams using specifically allocated budgets and methodologies oriented to promote among other objectives the aggregation of the companies.
A recent initiative started with a dedicated Space Workshop, as a result of Piemonte Agency investigation activities, 4 regional space key players were able to propose 8 innovative product ideas having possible application in market commercial projects by next 3 or 4 years.
