The design of future aircrafts is highly linked to automated production lines and their techniques. On top of the performance the product becomes production oriented – integrated design. This will be reached by new build concepts for the fuselage considered by its design. Assembly of structure, systems and cabin elements in parallel. Balanced modularization vs. integration. From shell and section to a full barrel. A high level of automation balanced with manual work is the target. Additionally the design of the product and the production has to follow workers ergonomic and social need. Future aircraft design and manufacturing system need to be able to cover the aircraft performance plus a high level of industrialization.

The evolution from prototype production to series production using AM technology is already a reality in the aerospace world: mid 2013 the first in the world fully dedicated shop was operational in Cameri (ITA), and recently another fully dedicated shop has been announced to be built in Auburn (ALA) USA, both belonging to GEAviation.Notwithstanding this technology is still very young and prone to continuous development and improvement, the application to selected parts, materials, market combination demonstrates already significant advantages over the current consolidated technology.A few examples are hence shown highlighting, from case to case, the winning aspects for the customer such as: speed, no upfront tooling expenses, recurring cost, inventory reduction, design changes flexibility etc.At the same time warnings will be raised to avoid the illusion that AM is a medicine for all the “illness” of conventional manufacturing; a complete knowledge of Life Cycle Cost of the product must be taken into account to avoid wrong impulsive decisions with deep delusions in the future.

Advanced materials and manufacturing processes are a hallmark feature in the legacy of Lockheed Martin products. Dr. Gardner’s team has developed and demonstrated unique additive manufacturing equipment and capabilities to achieve point wise composition control and scale-up of additive thermoplastics and composites with articulated robotic equipment. Large scale additive alloys have application for propellant tanks that promise to replace forged equivalent parts while eliminating half the cost and reducing the production time from 12 months to 1 month. Lockheed Martin has ongoing developments in metallic and polymer/composite additive manufacturing with the goal of increasing capability and complexity of parts. The development and utility of these manufacturing processes will be presented.

Within the scope of more than 170 different Projects, TAI makes its business starting with conceptual design thru final delivery of end-items to its customers, including  potential solution alternatives and cost to support variable budgets for developing Indigenous platforms in Turkey. TAI continuously searches around the world  for dependable subcontractors/suppliers with niche technologies to be utilized in its projects for the Aerospace platforms. Therefore, the Supply chain management becomes an important role player because it leads the role of outsourcing systems and major airborne equipment needed for these projects.

ALENIA AERMACCHI – Managing Global Supply Chains Now for Tomorrow’s Risk

For all largest aircraft manufacturers in the world the role of Supply Chain has significantly increased in the last 10 years. In fact, while these have devoted their capabilities to develop new manufacturing technologies (an example is represented by the role of composite in aerostructures), suppliers had an increasing role in carrying out activities in machining, metal sheet working or sub-assembly. Therefore is of the hugest strategic importance for large aircraft manufacturers to govern supply chain, with an adequate level of interfaces. By considering the evolution process of the Major OEMs that are becoming System Integrator starting from Equipment manufacturer, Alenia Aermacchi procurement strategy is more focused,especially for the new programs, to identify a limited number of selected partner capable to provide systems already pre-integrated to ensure stability, efficiency and effectivness of this Supply Chain, and allow the implementation of the risk sharing approach for the new product development. The main leverage to implement "a state of the arts" Procurement Policy is to establish real Partnerships with the major OEM and extend this process to the whole AA Supply Chain, to achieve and maintain the necessary level of competiveness. In addition this will allow the implementation of synergies aimed to fulfill a real "design to cost" based on both OEM and AA technological leadership. This approach will provide also effective improvements of the product performance throughout the entire life cycle and of the product support services. In perspective this new role, reserved to selected suppliers, will help them to growth in terms of organization capabilities, financial size and technological role (to achieve, finally, a role of partner, especially for the new products). To prevent or mitigate risks of the supply chain, a capacity and capability assessment plays an important role by enabling system integrators to identify strenghteness and weakeness of the suppliers and, in ultimate analysis, to identify the most adequate suppliers to the role of Tier1 or partner. This approach seems more efficient and adequate to a role of an aircraft integrator as Alenia Aermacchi is. .
